Detergent Caked in the Dispenser

Why is Detergent Remaining in the Whirlpool Dishwasher Dispenser

There are a couple of different reasons why detergent can remain in the dispenser:

  • Did the dishwasher run a full cycle?  If the cycle was interrupted or didn't finish, the detergent may not have time to dissolve.
  • Is the dispenser blocked?  Large items could prevent the dispenser from fully opening; make sure water action can reach the dispenser. Rearrange items and restart the cycle.
  • How is the water temperature? Detergent packets usually dissolve more easily, and should be placed in the dispenser the same as powdered or gel. If they are not dissolving, verify the water temperature and run the hot water in the sink closest to the dishwasher.
  • Is the detergent old? Older detergent exposed to air will clump and not dissolve well, which will cause the dispenser door to stick to the detergent. Replace the detergent if necessary and store the detergent in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry place.
  • Does the dispenser need to be cleaned? Clean dispenser when caked detergent is present.
  • Check that nothing blocks the upper or lower spray arm. Items in the rack can block the spray arms. If the arms are blocked, the detergent door may not open fully, and may not dissolve entirely.
