Dishwasher Error Codes - Reading

Reading and Understanding Whirlpool Dishwasher Error Codes

Dishwasher error codes can quickly point you toward the cause of a problem so you can restore normal operation sooner. Whether your Whirlpool dishwasher shows a digital code or blinks a sequence of lights, learning how to interpret those signals makes troubleshooting faster and safer. This guide explains what error codes are, how to read and record them, common meanings, steps you can take at home, and when to contact Whirlpool for support. It also focuses on reading and understanding dishwasher error codes in practical, easy-to-follow ways so you can make sense of fault codes Whirlpool dishwasher models may display.

How to Read and Record Error Codes Safely

  • Digital display models: Most show the code automatically when a fault occurs. If the screen is idle, wake it by pressing a button. The error code will be displayed as a F#E#
  • Flashing LED models: If the clean light is flashing, this usually an error code communication.  Whirlpool dishwashers use a two-part flashing sequence to communicate specific errors.  To read the code correctly, look for a distinct pause in the blinking pattern.
    • Count the first set of rapid flashes. This is the Function (F) number.
    • Watch for a short pause (about 1–2 seconds).\
    • Count the second set of rapid flashes. This is the Error (E) number.
    • Watch for a longer pause (about 5 seconds) before the entire sequence repeats. Example: If the light flashes 7 times, pauses, flashes 1 time, pauses, and then repeats—that is an F7-E1 error code

Common Dishwasher Error Codes and Their Meanings

Exact codes vary by model, but many Whirlpool dishwashers follow a similar structure (often an F–E format indicating a fault category and subcategory) or use consistent flashing patterns. The categories below offer plain-language explanations to help interpret what you see on the panel. These summaries support reading and understanding dishwasher error codes quickly at home.

How to Perform a Power Cycle

Much like a computer, resetting the dishwasher control can sometimes solve the issues you are experiencing. To reset the dishwasher control panel, it needs to be disconnected from the power source for 30 seconds. If your dishwasher is plugged into an outlet, simply unplug the unit for 30 seconds and then plug the unit back in. If the dishwasher is hard wired to the power supply, turn the breaker off at the home electrical panel that powers the dishwasher for 30 seconds and then turn the breaker back on.
