Long Dry Times - Dryer

Possible Solutions

Is the dryer heating?

To test if the dryer is heating properly: 1. Select a heated cycle 2. Run the cycle for 5 minutes (empty dryer). 3. Open the door and feel inside.  If the dryer is not heating, follow the troubleshooting information under the "Operation" section of the troubleshooting guide.

Is the dryer new?

If you connected a new dryer to the old house venting, you may still have long dry times. Venting going to the outside of the home must be cleaned every one to two years or as needed when dry performance has decreased. This will depend on the frequency of use, types of items dried, pet hair, etc. Dryers need good airflow to the outside for clothing to dry and for optimal performance.

What cycle was selected?

Cycle selection is important.  If the clothes don't reach the desired dryness level, select a different cycle, such as "Regular."  For best performance, use an automatic cycle.

  • Air Dry or Fluff: does not add heat to the dryer at any time during the cycle. It is best used for items where no heat is desired, such as items that will shrink easily.
  • Quick Dry and Rapid Dry: are timed cycles designed to dry smaller loads.
  • The EcoBoost™ option will default on only for the Regular/Normal cycle and is only available on that cycle. This option increases your energy savings by using a slightly lower heat level. The EcoBoost™ option will increase drying times by approximately 40 minutes, which will be reflected on the LED Display. If optimal time is desired, touch ECOBOOST to turn off this option.

Is "AF" or "Check Vent" displayed?

An AF (Restricted Air Flow) or "Check Vent" error code indicates that the lint screen or vent is clogged; the vent is crushed, kinked, or has too many turns. The dryer will continue to run when the error is present. Touch any key to clear the code from the display and return to the estimated time remaining.

Is the lint screen clean?

The lint screen will be located either on top of the dryer or in the door opening. A screen blocked by lint can increase drying time. It is important to clean your lint screen after every use. If you use fabric softener regularly, your lint screen may have residue build-up that is typically not visible. This residue should be cleaned occasionally for better drying performance.

Is the vent crushed?

Rigid or Flexible metal venting is recommended for use on all dryers. Other materials, such as aluminum foil or plastic, are NOT recommended because they can easily collapse or be crushed. Your dryer may get pushed back into the venting material and can get crushed behind the dryer.

Use only 4" diameter heavy metal exhaust vent material. Larger or smaller diameter material will reduce good air movement and cause longer drying times.

Verify that the outside Exhaust Hood is not blocked or restricted

Exhaust hoods must be at least 12" (305 mm) from the ground or any object that may obstruct exhaust (such as flowers, rocks, bushes, or snow). It is possible for debris, such as animal nests, to obstruct the venting. Clear all debris from the hood and attached venting.

Is the Vent length and number of elbows correct?

Venting from the dryer to the home's exterior should be as straight and short as possible.  Increased length and elbows can reduce airflow and encourage lint build-up. Do not use vent runs longer than those specified in the “Vent System Chart.” Exhaust systems longer than those specified will:

  • Shorten the life of the dryer
  • Reduce performance, resulting in longer drying times and increased energy usage.

Does the home venting line need to be cleaned or tested?

If a dryer is heating but still has long dry times, the likely cause is a vent issue or restricted airflow. The venting going from the dryer to the outside of the home must be cleaned every one to two years or as needed when dry performance has decreased.  You can also contact a professional vent cleaning service and have your vent inspected for obstructions.

Regular dryer vent cleaning will:

  • Reduce Drying Time
  • Increase Air Flow
  • Reduce Energy Cost

Before scheduling service, a dryer vent test kit (W11224254) is available, the kit will help you to determine if the venting is restricted and needs to be cleaned. To order, contact Customer Service.
