Knocking or Thumping - Noise

Possible Solutions

Knocking or Thumping Noises:

New washers make many different noises compared to previous washers. Typically, a knocking or thumping noise will only occur during agitation or wash and spin portions of the cycle.

  • Agitation/Wash: The drive system will make a knocking or thumping noise as it shifts from agitation mode to spin mode or vice versa. Do not overload the machine, and do not wash one item by itself. If you wash a bulky item, such as a blanket, use towels as counterweights to even the load.
  • Spin: With an off-balance load, the tub may hit the washer's cabinet, causing a knocking/thumping sound. Be sure that you are loading clothing evenly around the agitator or wash plate. Also, verify that the washer is level front to back, side to side and that all four feet are touching the floor with the locking nuts tightened.
  • Fill: The drain or water inlet hoses may knock against the washer cabinet's rear. Secure the hoses using the beaded strap supplied with the washer (on some models) or a wire tie. The washer's vibration can be carried through to the hoses. Also, as water is pushed through the hoses, it can cause them to move. A knocking noise will be heard if the hoses have enough space to hit the cabinet. Also, verify that no other items, such as everyday household items, are leaning against the washer. Brooms, dustpans, dryer racks, or hangers can make rattling noises if they are leaning against the washer, especially during high spin speeds. Always check the outside of your washer before using it for items that may cause noise.
