Not Filling or Takes too Long to Fill - Top Load Washer

Possible Solutions

Check washer inlet hoses and water supply

Check the household faucets to see if the hot and cold water supply lines are turned on. Make sure to open both water supply lines completely for proper fill. Verify that there are no kinks in the inlet hoses.

Is the drain hose correctly installed?

Check drain hose for proper installation.  Use the U-shaped drain hose form on the drain hose and securely attach to drainpipe (standpipe) or tub.  Check that only 4.5" (113 mm) of the drain hose is in the drainpipe (standpipe).  Do not tape over the drain opening.

The drainpipe (standpipe) height requirements minimum is 39" (99 cm).

Make sure the drain hose is not kinked or clogged. Straighten the hose for adequate water flow. Remove any blockage from the drainpipe or utility sink.

Water usage will vary

These washers use less water than older traditional machines.  Cycles such as Heavy Duty or Bulky Items will fill with more water than the more energy-efficient cycles, such as normal.  Load size selection will also change the amount of water.

During rinse, most cycles use a spray rinse. However, by using the Fabric Softener option, or the Extra Rinse option, the washer will use a deep fill rinse.

NOTE:  Cycles are designed for specific clothing items, and using them other than instructed in the Owner's Manual may result in less than optimal performance.

Does your washer have a Water Level option?

If your model has the option to choose a water level, you can choose to have a deep water wash or auto-sensing.

If you would like the machine to automatically sense the appropriate water level for the load size and type, turn the Water Level knob to the Auto Sensing setting.

If you would like to add the maximum amount of water to your wash cycle, turn the Water Level knob to the Deep Water Wash setting.

NOTE: Expect longer cycle times due to extended fill times when using the Deep Water Wash option.

Are you using anti-flood devices and controls?

Whirlpool recommends that appliances be directly connected to the water supply for optimum machine performance.

Were you using the Bulky Cycle (available on some models)?

Cycle time may be longer during water fill when using the Bulky Cycle, depending on the load size. The Bulky Cycle uses a series of fills while agitating.  It may appear that there is not enough water to wash a bulky load, but the washer will continue to add water while its sensors monitor the load. It could take up to 10-12 minutes to fill.

This process also increases the cleaning performance — the benefit in agitating while filling results in improved mechanical action for a wide variety of loads. The Bulky Cycle is recommended for a lot of different types of items (jackets, rugs, comforters, etc.), all of which have different optimal water levels for load motion, depending on load size. Executing agitation during fill improves the washer's ability to reach the optimal wash water level. During the Bulky Cycle, the fill will occasionally pause for the washer to provide additional mechanical action at a variety of water levels.
