Using the Solid (Locked) Cycle

How to Use the Solid or Locked Cycle on My Whirlpool Trash Compactor

The Solid (Locked) cycle—also known as Solid Pack or Drawer Lock—compresses trash and then holds the ram down to keep a tight, dense bundle. This setting limits spring-back, and helps you go longer between bag changes. Use the guidance below to understand how it works, operate it safely, and keep your compactor in top condition. If you are looking for how to use the solid or locked cycle on trash compactor units of different capacities, the basics are the same, but always consult your garbage compactor manual for model-specific notes.

How the Solid (Locked) Cycle Works

Purpose and benefits: After compression, the Solid (Locked) cycle maintains downward pressure on the load. This creates a denser pack that occupies less space, decreases air pockets, and reduces how often you need to change bags. It is especially useful for mixed household trash that tends to rebound after a standard cycle. For owners comparing trash compactor size, the hold time and pressure may vary slightly by size of trash compactor.

Key components: A selector switch or electronic button lets you choose Solid/Locked. Safety interlocks prevent operation when the drawer is open. The motor drives the ram downward to compact and then holds position during the solid phase. Depending on model, an indicator light or display confirms the locked hold is active. Your garbage compactor manual will show the exact control names used on your panel and any indicators tied to the Solid/Locked function.

When to use and safety notes: Choose Solid/Locked when you want maximum compaction—after several regular cycles or before changing a full bag. Keep hands and tools clear of the drawer and ram at all times. Use a control lock or child lock if available. If power is lost during the hold, the ram may stay down until power returns; do not force the drawer open.

During the Solid Cycle, the ram will stay in the down position for extra compacting. The drawer is locked and cannot be opened when the ram is down.

  1. Press Solid (Locked) on the compactor control. Turn the key-knob to Start, and then release the key-knob. NOTE: The indicator on the control panel shows when the Solid cycle is in use.
  2. After 30 minutes or more, turn the key knob to Start to raise the compacting ram or press Normal (Unlocked).

NOTE: When the compacting cycle is done, turn the key-knob to Off. Remove the key knob and store it out of children's reach.
