Why Does the Outside of the Cabinet Feel Warm

Why Does the Cabinet of My Whirlpool Refrigerator Feel Warm?

It’s normal for the outside of a refrigerator cabinet to feel warm during everyday operation. If you’re wondering “why does the outside of the cabinet feel warm,” remember the appliance moves heat from inside the compartments to the surrounding room, and some of that heat is released through the cabinet walls and front frame. This can make a warm refrigerator feel like the fridge is warm on the outside, especially after heavy use. Knowing what causes this warmth, when it’s expected, and how to reduce it can help your refrigerator run efficiently and safely.

What Causes Warmth on the Cabinet Exterior

Refrigerators remove heat from the fresh food and freezer compartments and it exits to the room. On many models, condenser loops are built into the cabinet walls and front frame to help dissipate heat. As a result, a slight to moderately warm feel on the sides or around door openings often indicates the system is operating as designed. This is a common reason people ask, “why does the outside of the cabinet feel warm,” and why a warm refrigerator can seem like a fridge hot on outside even when it’s normal.

Room conditions directly affect how warm the cabinet feels. In a hot kitchen or during seasonal temperature spikes, the compressor runs longer to maintain set temperatures. Longer run times move more heat through the cabinet structure, making exterior surfaces feel warmer and sometimes like the fridge is warm on the outside.

Heat is also generated and released by the compressor and condenser located at the back or underneath the unit. You may notice more warmth along the sides near the front frame, the mullion between doors, or areas close to the condenser path. After loading warm groceries, frequent door openings, or during initial cool-down after installation, the cabinet may feel warmer temporarily until temperatures stabilize.

At times, the refrigerator exterior may feel even warmer than usual, especially where the gaskets meet the frame, which includes the mullion and cabinet flanges. This heat is generated by a heat loop located within the refrigerator walls near the gasket areas. This heat is necessary to keep moisture and frost from forming on the refrigerator exterior. This could last up to 24 hours.

Common Reasons

This condition may be caused by one or more of the following:

  • Initial startup of the refrigerator from room temperature
  • Loading fresh food or food that is near room temperature
  • Heavy usage during certain times of the day

If the refrigerator exterior continually feels hot in these areas, check the condenser for excessive dirt or debris and clean it if necessary. Airflow blocked by lint, pet hair, and dirt will cause the condenser and heat loop temperature to increase. For instructions on how to clean your condenser, please refer to the Installation Instructions or the Owner's Manual. If you would like to download or view product literature for your appliance, please visit our Manuals and Literature page.
