Changing the Light Bulb
Whirlpool Refrigerator Light Bulb Replacement
Replacing a refrigerator light bulb is a quick, simple task that restores clear visibility inside your Whirlpool fridge. Use the steps below to gather the right tools, work safely, access and swap the bulb, and choose a compatible replacement, so your lighting works reliably. Whether you’re changing the light bulb in your refrigerator for the first time or need a refresher on changing fridge light bulb parts, this guide will help you get the fridge light shining again.
Please review your Owner's Manual for specific instructions for your model. On some models, the interior lights are LEDs that cannot be changed. Other models require a 40-watt bulb. Not all bulbs will fit your refrigerator - be sure to replace the bulb with one of the same size, shape, and wattage.
Step-by-Step Guide to Changing the Light Bulb
Safety precautions
- Unplug the refrigerator or switch off the power at the circuit breaker to avoid electric shock.
- Allow the bulb and the surrounding area to cool if the light was recently on.
- Handle glass bulbs carefully. For incandescent bulbs, avoid touching the glass with your bare hands.
Accessing and replacing the bulb
- Locate the light: Fresh food bulbs are typically near the top or side. Freezer bulbs are usually on the ceiling or rear wall. Some models use an LED light module rather than a screw-in bulb. If you’re changing fridge light bulb components in a freezer section, check both the top and rear wall.
- Remove the lens or cover: Many Whirlpool models have a clear plastic lens. Press the release tabs or remove the small screws (if present), then gently tilt and pull off the cover.
- Remove the bulb: For screw-in bulbs, turn counterclockwise to remove. If you see a sealed LED module with wires and no removable bulb, call for service.
- Install the new bulb: Match the base and wattage. Screw clockwise until snug without overtightening. Choosing the correct Whirlpool refrigerator light bulb ensures proper brightness and durability.
- Reinstall the lens: Align tabs and snap into place, or reinstall screws.
- Restore power and test: Plug the refrigerator back in and open the door to confirm the light turns on. If the Whirlpool refrigerator light does not work, check that the bulb is fully seated.
NOTE: Some LED replacement light bulbs are not recommended for wet/damp environments. Refrigerator fresh food and freezer compartments are considered wet/ damp environments. Read and follow all instructions on the LED packaging when replacing the factory-installed LED bulb. A replacement LED bulb can be purchased from an authorized dealer.
