Odors and Smoke in Oven

Odors and Smells of Newly Installed Whirlpool Ovens

A small amount of smoke or odor can be normal, especially the first time a new range or oven is used.  It is caused by the heating of new parts, insulating materials, a protective coating of oil that is used in the manufacturing process, and/or the tape used in shipping, and should dissipate after the first few uses.

First Use

If you want to get rid of the odor in the oven more quickly, we recommend the following:

  1. Ensure all packaging materials have been removed from the oven cavity

  2. Set the oven to a “Bake” cycle, setting the temperature to 350 degrees

  3. Continuing running the cycle for 60 minutes

  4. If the smell persists after the cycle, repeat the process once or twice more

  5. Once the oven cavity is cool, wipe down the interior with a soft, damp cloth.

Is the new smell dangerous?

Odor and smoke when you turn on an oven for the first time is normal and not harmful.  The best way to get rid of the smell is to run an empty cycle.  It is recommended that you do not cook any food prior to this cycle as the smell and potentially the taste can stick with your food.  For people sensitive to strong odors or smoke, it is recommended to open nearby windows and/or turn on a kitchen vent (if available). Doing this will help dissipate the new oven odor.

IMPORTANT: The health of some birds are extremely sensitive to the fumes given off. Exposure to fumes may result in the death of certain birds. Always move birds to another closed and well-ventilated room.

Heavily Soiled

Ovens that are heavily soiled can also produce odors or smoke.  Keeping the oven clean with help prevent this from happening.  Reminder, to avoid permanent damage to the oven bottom finish, do not line the oven bottom with any type of foil or liner. To catch spills, place foil on the rack below the dish. Make sure the foil is at least ½" (1.3 cm) larger than the dish and that it is turned up at the edges.  For best cooking results, do not cover the entire oven rack with foil because air must be able to move freely and the foil can trap debris causing odors.
