Our instructions align with Whirlpool features and controls to help you get the most from your dishwasher, from filling the dispenser to adjusting settings for your typical load. If you’re wondering where to put dishwasher rinse aid or what rinse aid does, the following frequently asked questions about using rinse aid will guide you.

Benefits of Using Rinse Aid

Rinse aid can significantly improve drying performance. By helping water sheet off dishes and glassware rather than bead, it speeds evaporation during the dry cycle. This is especially beneficial for plastics and items with textured or intricate surfaces that tend to retain moisture. Keep the rinse aid dispenser filled to the recommended level and check it regularly if you run frequent cycles, especially if your local dishwasher rinse conditions include hard water.

It also reduces water spots and streaks, giving dishes a clearer, more polished appearance. By lowering water surface tension, rinse aid limits mineral deposits on glass and stainless steel. If spotting occurs, verify the dispenser cap is tightly closed and adjust the rinse aid setting to fine-tune the dose based on your local water hardness.

Beyond appearance and drying, rinse aid can support overall efficiency. Better sheeting improves drainage and can help the appliance maintain consistent performance across wash and dry phases. Less residual moisture may shorten dry times and complement energy-saving cycles. Refill the reservoir when the indicator shows low, and consult your owner’s manual for model-specific dispenser settings and maintenance tips.

Common Rinse Aid Questions

My old dishwasher dried without Rinse Aid, and I had never used it before.

Today's dishwasher uses less energy than older models. Rinse Aid can help your modern dishwasher achieve better drying.

I use the All-in-One detergent pack.

The All-in-One dishwasher detergent pack may contain Rinse Aid, but it's designed to dissolve in the main wash before the final rinse, so it may not necessarily promote drying. Using Rinse Aid separately in the dispenser further assists in drying during the final rinse.

I don't want anything coating my dishes.

When used, the dishwasher automatically dispensed about 3 milliliters (less than ½ teaspoon) of Rinse Aid during the final rinse of every cycle. Rinse Aid changes the surface tension of water, making the water (and Rinse Aid) "run-off" of dishes, promoting better drying.

The walls and door of my dishwasher are wet.

Rinse Aid can help your dishwasher retain less moisture on the interior walls and door.

I don't want a chemical added to my dishwasher.

The primary ingredient in Rinse Aid, a surfactant, is also found in dishwasher detergents. In dishwasher detergent, surfactants remove greasy food residues from dishes, suspending them in the wash water and preventing them from re-depositing on cutlery, plates, and glasses. They also help water to drain from these items during the wash cycle.

I don't want to spend any more money.

Rinse Aid costs pennies per cycle. Rinse Aid can help you save time and effort by having fewer dishes to hand-dry. Watch the following video for more information about Rinse Aid.
