Preventing Detergent from Re-depositing on Clothing

How to Prevent Detergent from Re-depositing on Clothing

Are you using HE High-Efficiency detergent?

Top Load HE washers are designed to use only HE High-Efficiency Detergent.

Was the cycle interrupted, and then the Deep Clean or Stain Option selected?

The  Deep Clean or Stain option (on some models) should be started on a dry load only. These cycles should not be selected after the tub fills with water.

Is the wash water temperature colder than 60°F (15.6°C)?

Laundry detergents are formulated to clean well at temperatures above 60°F (15.6°C). Water temperatures below 60°F (15.6°C) do not dissolve detergents well, especially powdered detergents. Use liquid detergent for colder water temperatures. Run hot water in the sink nearest the washer before starting to ensure hot water in the water lines.

Was a slow wash speed cycle used?

Powdered detergent may not dissolve well in low-speed wash cycles, such as the hand-wash cycle. Use liquid detergent for best results. Always use only HE High-Efficiency detergent.

Were you washing a large load?

Leave enough space in the washer to allow the load to move freely. Tightly packed clothing in the washer may trap the detergent and not allow it to dissolve completely. Always use only HE High-Efficiency detergent. Reduce load size if needed.

Did you use too much detergent?

Always follow the detergent manufacturer's directions regarding the amount. Measure the detergent before putting it in the washer. You may need to use less detergent if you have very soft water or a very lightly soiled load. If too much detergent is used, it will be difficult to rinse it away fully.

When using detergents labeled 2x or higher, follow the manufacturer's directions regarding the amount. Since so little detergent is needed, it is easy to use too much.

Always use only HE High-Efficiency detergent.

Is your detergent old?

Older laundry detergents, especially powdered detergent, do not dissolve well in the washer. Keep detergent containers closed to extend the shelf life. Always use only HE High Efficiency detergent.

Which detergent should you use?

Whirlpool recommends using Swash™ Laundry Detergent. It is designed to work in both high-efficiency (HE) and non-HE washing machines. With an 8x concentrated formula, you’ll use about a quarter of the detergent you’d need with a traditional 2x concentration detergent. It may look like a small amount, but you’ll be amazed at its effectiveness.
