Operating a Batch-Feed Waste Disposer
Operating Your Whirlpool Batch-Feed Disposer:
Whirlpool batch-feed disposers are built for simple, safe use. Unlike a continuous feed disposal, they only run when the stopper is engaged, helping prevent splashing and accidental contact. Use the guidance below for operating a batch-feed waste disposer to start and stop the disposer correctly, choose appropriate materials to grind, troubleshoot common issues, and keep your appliance performing at its best. Whether you refer to it as a batch feed garbage disposal or a batch feed unit, these steps apply to Whirlpool models.
Generally, batch-feed disposer is activated by the stopper. All batch-feed stoppers have two purposes:
- Sealing the disposer opening so the sink can be filled with water
- Turning the disposer on and off
Sealing the Disposer:
To seal the disposer opening so you can fill the sink with water:
- Invert the stopper to the drain stopper position
- Place the stopper in the sink opening
- Press down while turning the stopper counterclockwise to secure
If your disposer is powered through a wall switch, you have a continuous-feed disposer. Please see Operating your continuous-feed waste disposer, for proper operating instructions.
Batch-feed disposer operating instructions:
- Remove the stopper and scrape food waste into the disposer grind chamber. Do not pack the grinding chamber with food waste.
- Turn on a moderate-to-strong flow of cold water. It is absolutely necessary that cold water flows into the disposer while in operation.
NOTE: Cold water hardens greasy substances, making it easy to grind them into tiny particles. It also keeps grease from sticking to the drain lines. If you have a double sink, make sure the faucet is positioned to the side where the disposer is installed during disposer operation.
- Place the stopper in the disposer position, back into the sink opening. Turn the stopper to the left or right until the disposer starts.
- Allow both the disposer and cold water to run after the grinding is completed to help flush the drain pipes.
- Turn the handle to the right or left to stop the disposer, and turn off the water.

Maintenance and Care for Long Life
Routine maintenance
- Clean the splashguard and stopper weekly. Remove and wash with warm, soapy water; rinse and dry.
- To deodorize, grind a few ice cubes with a small amount of baking soda or citrus peels while running cold water.
- Run the disposer for 10–15 seconds with cold water periodically, even when not grinding, to keep parts moving.
- Avoid harsh chemical drain cleaners. Use mild dish soap, baking soda, or a cleaner recommended by the manufacturer.
Seasonal checks and performance tips
- Every few months, inspect the mounting assembly, sink flange, and discharge connections for looseness or leaks. Tighten fasteners per your Use and Care Guide and replace worn gaskets or splashguards.
- If you notice corrosion, persistent leaks, or repeated resets, schedule service. Replace the stopper if it is cracked, warped, or fails to engage reliably.
- For best performance, feed waste gradually with cold water running and avoid overloading. Cut large or tough items into small pieces. Keep installation and service records and use only recommended cleaning products to help support warranty eligibility for your batch feed unit.
These maintenance practices apply when operating a batch-feed waste disposer and help keep a batch feed garbage disposal running smoothly for years. If your home also has a continuous feed disposal in another sink, follow similar cleaning and inspection routines.
