Not Making Ice - Refrigerator

Possible Solutions

Is the refrigerator making ice? 

If the Ice maker is making ice but not dumping it into the ice bin, try resetting the Ice Maker.  To reset the ice maker, unplug the refrigerator for 1 minute.  After resetting, wait a couple of hours and check for ice production; ice is in the bin. 

Is the ice maker turned on?

Check to make sure the ice maker is turned "on." 

Depending on the model, you may need to access the refrigerator's settings or options section on the control panel. Press the Options button to enter Options mode. The words “Ice Maker” will illuminate. Then press Temp to toggle between “Ice Maker” and “Ice Maker Off.” When the ice maker is turned off, “Ice Maker Off” flashes thrice and stays lit. When the ice maker is set to off, it will stop producing ice. Pressing the ice maker, if the ice maker is currently off, turns it on.

Was the water filter recently replaced? 

If the water filter was just replaced or installed, ensure the filter was installed correctly.  If the water filter is not seated properly, it can cause no or low ice production and water not dispensing properly.  Try removing the water filter and re-installing it.

Is the water line installed correctly? 

Ensure the water supply is properly connected to a cold water supply and the shutoff valve is fully opened. 

Check to make sure there are no kinks in the water supply line. A kink in the line can reduce water flow. Straighten the water source line to restore adequate water flow and pressure. To help reduce the chances of a pinched water line, do not push the refrigerator too far back against the wall or cabinet.

 

Does your water filter need to be replaced?

A clogged or incorrectly installed water filter will reduce the water flow to the ice maker and dispenser, resulting in small ice cubes, low ice production, or decreased water flow.  If the refrigerator has a water dispenser, check for a problem with the filter by doing the following:

  1. Dispense water using the water dispenser and note the amount of water flow.
  2. Remove the filter. The filter is located either in the base grille or inside the refrigerator compartment.
  3. Dispense water with the filter removed. If the water flow noticeably increases, the filter is either clogged or incorrectly installed. A clogged filter will need to be replaced in order to correct the low flow.

If the filter is clogged and you are not able to immediately replace it, leave the filter out so the water system is in bypass mode. With the filter removed, the water system will continue to operate, bypassing the filter, and the clogged filter will not cause slow water dispensing or low ice production. However, to have filtered water, you will need to install a new filter.

Was the water filter flushed?

Once the filter has been replaced, it is important to flush the water system. This process removes excess air, prepares the filter for use, and removes excess carbon. The air in the water system may cause dripping at the dispenser, small/hollow ice cubes, or a cloudy appearance in the water quality. 

  1. Use a sturdy container to depress, hold the water dispenser lever for 5 seconds, and then release it for 5 seconds. As air is removed, water may spurt from the dispenser. 
  2. Repeat the process until water starts to flow at a steady pass and all the air is out of the water line. 
  3. Continue this process (5 seconds on, 5 seconds off) until at least 1 gallon of water has been dispensed. 

After flushing the water system, allow 24 hours for the refrigerator to cool and chill the water. Then, dispense enough water every week to maintain a fresh supply.
