You will also learn how and when to safely clean the condenser coils in refrigerator systems, including practical answers to how do you clean refrigerator coils and how to clean refrigerator coils on common Whirlpool designs.
Refer to the Owner's Manual for additional information on cleaning the condensers for your specific refrigerator model. Some models do not require the condenser coils to be cleaned; others can only be cleaned by a certified technician.
How often should you clean the coils?
In a normal home operating environment, routine condenser cleaning is not typically needed. Households with pets, heavy kitchen traffic, or dust from construction should inspect and clean every 3 to 6 months. Always check your model’s Use and Care Guide for coil location and any model-specific guidance. If you are planning how to clean refrigerator coil assemblies during seasonal deep cleans, pair this with filter and gasket checks to maximize performance.
Steps to Clean the Condenser:
Tools: soft-bristle coil brush, refrigerator coil brush, or vacuum with crevice or brush attachment.
Safety: Unplug the refrigerator or switch off the circuit breaker before cleaning. Do not disturb water lines for ice or water dispensers. Wear safety glasses, avoid bending fins or tubing, and secure any panels or grilles before restoring power.

- Unplug the refrigerator or disconnect the power.
- Remove the base grille at the bottom of the refrigerator. Do this by opening both doors, placing your hands along the ends of the grille, and pushing in on the top of the grille while pulling up on the bottom.
- Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush to clean the grille, the open areas behind the grille, and the front surface area to be cleaned. A specific Refrigerator Coil Brush can also be used. We recommend using the Whirlpool Maintenance Brush part number 4210463RW.

- Replace the base grille. Line up the grille support tabs with the metal clips and push the grille firmly to snap it into place.

- Plug in the refrigerator or reconnect power.
