Particles in Water - Cloudy Water - Side by Side Refrigerator

Possible Solutions

White Particles in Ice Cubes

White particles in melting ice are actually minerals in your water. All water contains some dissolved minerals, and areas with high mineral content are considered to have "hard water". The particles are usually calcium carbonate.

The colder the water becomes, the less capable it is of suspending minerals. As water turns to ice, these particles begin to show up. An originally dissolved mineral has been converted to a visible form. They are a normal occurrence, especially in areas with hard water.

Does your water filter need to be replaced?

It is recommended that the water filter be replaced every 6 months when the indicator light comes on,  or as needed.  A clogged water filter can cause several issues, including particles in the water.  Replacing your water filter regularly will help reduce the number of containments in the water supply.

Was the water filter flushed?

Once the filter has been replaced, it is important to flush the water system. This process removes excess air, prepares the filter for use, and removes excess carbon. The air in the water system may cause dripping at the dispenser, small/hollow ice cubes, or a cloudy appearance in the water quality.

  1. Use a sturdy container to depress, hold the water dispenser lever for 5 seconds, and then release it for 5 seconds. As air is removed, water may spurt from the dispenser.
  2. Repeat the process until water starts to flow at a steady pass and all the air is out of the water line.
  3. Continue this process (5 seconds on, 5 seconds off) until at least 1 gallon of water has been dispensed.

After flushing the water system, allow 24 hours for the refrigerator to cool and chill the water. Then, dispense enough water every week to maintain a fresh supply.
